Histamine Research ELISA TM

Histamine is not only a main mediator in allergic reactions but also acts as a neurotransmitter within the central nervous system (CNS). Here it modulates basic processes such as wakefulness, cognitive ability, control of pituitary gland, and food consumption.
The effects of histamine in the CNS are mediated through 4 different receptors, named H1 H4 receptors. High histamine concentrations are found in the CNS of patients with Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenic patients. In contrast CNS histamine levels are decreased in Alzheimer’s disease patients.

Histamine ELISA

In humans, histamine (β-imidazole ethylamine) is one of the most important mediators and takes part in the initial phase of an anaphylactic reaction (“immediate type” allergy).
It is produced by basophils and by mast cells found in connective tissues .
Of clinical interest is also the quantification of the histamine release from basophilic leucocytes in allergies (please refer to the add-on kit Histamine Release; reference no. BA E-1100).

Histamine Release

In humans, Histamine acts predominantly on smooth muscle and blood vessels. It is responsible for the broncho-constriction occurring during the acute phase. In the vessels, its constrictive effect is limited to the venula, whereas arterioles are dilated. Furthermore, histamine causes a contraction of the cells of the vascular endothelium and increases the vascular permeability, thereby allowing higher-molecular substances to escape into the tissue.
