Histamine is not only a main mediator in allergic reactions but also acts as a neurotransmitter within the central nervous system (CNS). Here it modulates basic processes such as wakefulness, cognitive ability, control of pituitary gland, and food consumption.
The effects of histamine in the CNS are mediated through 4 different receptors, named H1 H4 receptors. High histamine concentrations are found in the CNS of patients with Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenic patients. In contrast CNS histamine levels are decreased in Alzheimer’s disease patients.

The Histamine Research ELISA (BA E-5800) is meant for the quantitative determination of Histamine in biological samples such as tissue homogenates, cerebrospinal fluid, cell culture and plasma samples (e.g. rat, mouse, dog, cat and horse).
